How to make a restaurant menu QR code
A table code should open a readable menu, not a desktop PDF that needs pinching and zooming. Decide where the menu will live and test the entire ordering journey on a phone before you print cards.
Set it up
- Publish a mobile-friendly menu page or a public PDF; check that guests can open it without signing in.
- Paste its HTTPS address into the Restaurant Menu generator and download SVG for print.
- Print one sample table card, scan it from a seated position and check prices, allergens and opening hours on mobile.
What to encode
Encode the public menu URL, not the PDF's filename or a link from a private drive. Link directly to the menu rather than a generic homepage that forces guests to hunt for it.
Print size and contrast
Start with a 3 cm square on a table tent, preserve the white quiet zone and use dark ink on a matte white background. Increase size if the link is long or the surface is glossy.
Where to place it
Place a card near each place setting but away from spills and creases. Print 'Scan for menu' and a short human-readable URL for guests who cannot scan.
Common mistakes
- A menu behind a staff-only login will not open for guests.
- Do not laminate over a fold or cover the quiet zone with a decorative border.
- Check the final printed card under the restaurant's actual lighting.
When to use a dynamic code
A static menu link works if its URL never changes, even when you edit the page at that URL. For seasonal menu hosts or changing PDF links, a dynamic QR lets you update the destination without replacing table cards; scan analytics also show usage. Dynamic codes keep redirecting to their last destination after cancellation, but codes above the Free limit become read-only and deleting one breaks printed copies.

FAQ
Can I update dishes without buying a dynamic code?
Yes, if your menu page stays at the same URL, update the page itself. A dynamic code is for changing the URL encoded behind the print.
Should I link a PDF or a menu page?
Use a responsive page when possible. If you use a PDF, open it on a phone over mobile data and make sure the text is readable.
