Code 128 Barcode Generator
Code 128 is the everyday workhorse of internal barcoding. It encodes letters, digits and punctuation in a compact symbol, so an SKU like SKU-2026-0042 or an asset number like LAB-IT-00917 fits in a short label. Warehouses, libraries, IT departments, labs and small shops all use it for their own numbering, with no registration required. Type the value exactly as your system stores it and QRPebble draws the barcode, checking that every character is printable ASCII and keeping the value under 80 characters so it stays scannable. The symbol's built-in checksum is calculated automatically.
How to make it
- Type the value into the Data field exactly as your inventory or asset system expects it.
- Check the preview; long values make wider barcodes, so shorten codes where you can.
- Download SVG for label software, or PNG at a high resolution for a thermal printer.
- Scan a printed label with your handheld scanner and confirm the value appears correctly in your system.
What gets encoded
Code 128 encodes all 95 printable ASCII characters (space through ~) and switches internally between its A, B and C code sets. Runs of digits are packed two per symbol in set C, which keeps numeric codes short. A mod-103 check character is added automatically, and scanners use it to verify the read without adding it to the output. This generator produces plain Code 128. GS1-128 labels with application identifiers such as (01) or (17) need FNC1 characters, which aren't supported here. Handheld laser and imaging scanners read Code 128 almost universally.

Tips before you print
- Numeric-only values print noticeably shorter because Code 128 packs digit pairs.
- Leave a quiet zone of at least 10 module widths on both sides; label edges often cut it too fine.
- For thermal printers, match the barcode's module width to the printer's dot size to avoid fuzzy bars.
- Avoid characters that look alike (O/0, I/1) in values people may also type by hand.

Do I need to register Code 128 numbers?
No. For internal use you choose any values. Registration applies only to GS1 identifiers used in trade.
Can I make a GS1-128 shipping label here?
Not yet. GS1-128 needs FNC1 and application identifiers, which this generator doesn't add.
Can it encode lowercase letters?
Yes. Code 128 supports upper and lowercase letters, digits and printable symbols.
